Description

Paul Cacia custom mouthpiece, made by Kanstul.
In a career spanning more than five decades Paul Cacia has been a band leader, contractor, arranger, producer and more. As a young man, Paul was fortunate enough to study with the likes of Rafael Mendez and Claude Gordon. Throughout his career he performed with the big bands of Al Hirt, Cat Anderson, Ray Anthony, Louis Bellson, Don Ellis, Tito Puente and more. Paul was most at home in the studio, and made numerous recordings throughout the 70s and 80s, including the fabulous
Alumni Tribute to Stan Kenton
, and the
Paul Cacia Jazz Orchestra - Legacy
. He may be best known as bandleader and featured performer for Las Vegas performer Pia Zadora. Sadly, Paul recently announced his retirement from public performance after a series of operations and medical setbacks due to severe diabetes.
From Paul's website:
The Cacia Signature Model trumpet mouthpiece is a custom mouthpiece designed for the modern player, whose demands include solo, upper register work, and lead playing. Designed, developed and played by Paul Cacia, these mouthpieces are manufactured by Zig Kanstul, with digital accuracy that could not have been achieved in the past. The Signature Model mouthpiece features the Leading Edge rim, which provides maximum displacement for facial comfort and endurance, providing proper air stream alignment and roll prevention. It creates the perfect set with proper placement every time from low C to double high C. The rim contour is flat, the cup is medium shallow, with a cup diameter of .660"
This mouthpiece was a prototype, made before Paul had settled on a blank contour and his signature stamp. It is based on his cups of choice: Schlke 13A4 and the Giardinelli 10S.
In the mid-2000's, we were building horns and making mouthpieces for Paul, so he was a frequent visitor to the Kanstul factory. Paul was originally from a city not too far from Anaheim and it turned out he and I had close friends in common, so it was only natural that we became pals. One morning, Paul was waiting there at the front door at 7 am. He was there to pick up a custom trumpet we had built for him, and one of his requests regarding this custom trumpet was that he wanted it to "slot the Double A" playing 1 and 2. Anyone who plays up there knows that even on the best-made trumpet that alternate fingerings are sometimes required to lock in that note. So, Paul had made his request at the beginning of the project, to which Zig Kanstul quipped "Well, I'll build you a horn and sooner or later you'll get that note". So the morning that Paul came in to pick up his custom trumpet he caught up with me in the lobby and said "Hey, man, play that double A you got and tell me what you think". Well, it was a little early in the day, and without benefit of a warm-up I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be, and so Paul, Zig and the office staff all had a good laugh at my expense.
